M·S Wawel ferry

Three Seconds

M/S Wawel ferry is both a working passenger vessel and a crucial link in the amphetamine-smuggling route from northern Poland to southern Sweden. Its scale and ordinary public spaces provide the unremarkable setting for a journey carrying a large, concealed drug shipment into the country.

Setting and Route

The ferry is described as one of the largest vessels running between northern Poland and southern Sweden. Its bar is notably modest: tables have crumbs on them, and the chairs have flimsy backs that seem to discourage lingering. The account gives the ship a practical, transient character rather than presenting it as a place of comfort or leisure.

Role in the trafficking operation

Fifteen prepared couriers carried amphetamine from Świnoujście aboard M/S Wawel ferry, then continued by train from Ystad. Each had carried two thousand grams, without knowing that fourteen others had also entered the country. By the time Piet Hoffmann supervises the unloading at various locations in Stockholm, the ferry has served as one stage in a coordinated movement of drugs across the border. The route makes the vessel significant not because it is the final destination, but because it connects the Polish departure point to the Swedish rail journey and the concealed distribution operation.
